The MFBF Matching Game (also known as Red Red Rock Game) was developed as an exercise activity for use in all aspects of Vision Therapy. The goal of this activity is to serve as a bridge from monocular to binocular activities, improving the efficiency of the patient’s use of accommodative and binocular systems. This game offers 7 levels of exercises based on the age and capability of the patient.

The MFBF  Matching Game has exercises that cover three different age ranges:

• Symbols for children 3-5 years old
• Numbers for children 5 years and up
• Words for 2nd Grade, 4th Grade, and over 6th Grade (Adult).

This therapy is based on the concept called "monocular Fixation in a binocular field" (MFBF). The MFBF procedure stresses the use of one eye at a time; thus the work is "monocular." At the same time, the procedure calls for both eyes to be open, seeing at the same time; thus the work is done in a "binocular field." This is accomplished by using anaglyphic (Red/Green) material to allow the patient to use both eyes to see while only one eye can see a central target, either what is depicted on the game tile or the Matrix. Successfully matching the tile to the correct position on the Matrix then requires the patient to use both eyes and not to suppress, as the eye with the green filter would be able to see the red printing on the tile (symbols, numbers, or letters) and the eye with the red filter would be able to see the black print on the red Matrix. Each Matrix of a group has 15 openings for 15 tiles.

At first, the patient (because of suppression) may have to use the tiles with a larger font size or pull the tiles closer (symbols, numbers, or letters). When suppression has been reduced in this manner, a different set of tiles with smaller optotypes (or crowded optotype tiles) can be selected so that the central portion can now easily be seen. The use of plus/minus lenses is crucial to this activity. At first, the activity should be performed with the patient’s near RX but without any additional lenses in place. Once the procedure is established, low-powered lenses (+/- 0.50 D) should be placed in front of each eye individually. This added stress to the visual system increases the difficulty of the activity but allows greater integration of accommodation and binocularity. The lenses and filters should be switched to change the visual input throughout the activity. For example, switch the lenses, and then switch the filters. As the patient progresses, the power of the lenses should be increased symmetrically or asymmetrically, based on the individual patient’s treatment.

Instructions For Use

By arranging a distant chart and a transparent near-card directly in front of one another, the patient becomes aware of the ability to shift the accommodative plane of focus from distance to near, and to any point in between. As they bring one plane into focus, they are able to observe the other plane blurring out of focus simultaneously. This arrangement isolates the z-axis from the x- and y-axes, high-lighting the focusing mechanism as a distinct experience from eye-tracking.

The Color Facility Rock Game is used in therapy for accommodative facility development. Both the range over which the patient can accommodate and the speed of the accommodative response is considered important in the technique. However, since the game involves both reading and color comprehension, it challenges cognitive skills as well. As a result, the Color Rock Game can also be used in the treatment of traumatic brain injury patients. It is to be noted that part of the cognitive challenge comes from the fact that the words naming a color are NOT in that color.

Color Facility Rock Game Set Includes: 

• 11" x 15" diatnce chart with 120 words in any one of six colors.

Color Facility Rock Game Set Instructions:

The large chart is used at 10' (3 m) and the near card is initially used at 16" (40 cm). The patient calls out the word (which names a color) then shifts focus to the same location on the near card and repeats the word in that same position. This sequence is repeated to the end of the chart and card. There are multiple ways to continue using the game with increasing difficulty and challenge for the patient.

Vertical Fusion Target Set Features: 

• Used in the trastment of vertical tropias or strabismus.
• Each of the 4 black cards fits into vectpograph (Vectograph not included)
• Cards provide the doctor and patient with targets that provide the appropriate feedback to help in the reduction of the angle of deviation. 
• Activity works best when integrated into a comprehensive vision therapy protocol is not meant to be the sole treatment of a vertical tropia or large phoria. 

In treating vertical misalignments (like tropias or large phorias) many attempt to build fusion ranges with various techniques including sliding vectograms or other targets or devices. Dr. Ludlam suggested that this led to better compensation for the deviation but it still fundamentally left the patient with the underlying problem. He recommended performing jump duction activities rather than range extension work and if it could be done in free space all the better. These targets are designed to be used on a lightbox and looked at from various distances. The patient wears Red/Green Glasses (supplied) and generally would start with the minimum prism necessary to see the horizontal row of boxes single and in a line. The jump duction activities with handheld prisms are done. Usually, 2-3 diopters are used in the direction that would reduce the amount of compensatory prism in place.

For example, if 10 bases down over the right eye are needed to get the boxes aligned with minimal to no head tilt then 2 or 3 bases down over the left eye or base up over the right eye are slid in place. For a moment the single horizontal line will turn into two lines. The prism should trigger a fusion response and the two lines should resolve to one line. Hold the image of the one line for 5-10 seconds and then remove the prism to return to the baseline. This would be done for 8-10 minutes a day and over time the fusing with the handheld prism in place should get easier and easier. Over time, the compensatory prism amount can be reduced leading to a change in the actual vertical baseline condition.

Black Handled Fixation Cube Features:

Eye Team Coloring Rock Game Features:

Eye Team Coloring Rock Game Instructions:

By arranging the distance color grid eye level, 10 feet away, the patient will then look at the blank coloring sheet to determine the color code that section needs to be colored in. The patient will then look at the distance color grid using eye movements to look across and down to determine the desired color. Continue until the whole image is colored in and then compare to the answer color sheet provided. The kit includes a pack of crayons, a guide, 1 distance color grid sheet, 4 colored in Eye-team answer sheets, and 20 (5 of each Eye-Team Character) blank coloring sheets.

Both distance colored grid and near color codes are 20/40, calibrated for 10 feet & 16 inches, respectively.
